HYPNOTHERAPY FOR ANXIETY

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING HYPNOTHERAPY FOR ANXIETY?

Although hypnotherapy for anxiety isn’t as widely known as psychotherapy and medication for treating anxiety, researchers and scientists have been studying the effects hypnotherapy for anxiety can have on mental health conditions for several years.

In one study, researchers scanned the brains of people while they were undergoing guided hypnosis sessions. They found that a hypnotised brain can experience changes in the brain that could give a person focused attention, greater emotional control and less self-consciousness.

HOW IS HYPNOTHERAPY USED TO TREAT ANXIETY

During a hypnotherapy for anxiety session, the therapist can give you what’s known as a “posthypnotic suggestion” while you’re in a state of trance.

In this dreamlike state, the mind becomes more open to suggestion. This allows the Hypnotherapist to ‘suggest’ to you how confident you will be the next time you experience the anxiety.

Due to the relaxed state you’re in, it can be easier to avoid any escalating anxiety symptoms you may feel, such as:

A feeling of impending doom
Shortness of breath
Increased heart rate
Muscle tension
Irritability
Nervous stomach

IT’S NATURAL

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

Anxiety comes from the fight, flee, freeze part of our brain known as the amygdala and is one of our natural responses.

It’s natural that everyone will experiences mild anxiety and stress in their life from time to time.

For example, it’s natural to feel anxious or nervous before a job interview or on a first date.

We do need this response to survive, for instance, if a car was heading our way we would want that rush of adrenaline to help us respond quickly and swerve out of the way!

STRESS & ANXIETY

FEELING RUBBISH?

Sometimes our brains can exaggerate things and we can experience an excessive amount of stress and anxiety everyday.

We start to worry about things that may never even happen, which fuels our anxiety even further leaving us feeling pretty rubbish.

We can experience symptoms such as restlessness, a rapid heart rate, fast breathing, sweating, shaking, dizziness, chest pain, nausea, obsessive thoughts and the list goes on.

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?

Hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and hypnotic suggestion are all names for a type of therapy that involves putting people into a trance-like state.

Achieving this state is intended to promote focus in an individual. Therefore, in this focused state, a person can be more receptive to suggestions, such as quitting smoking or overcoming a phobia of flying.

Hypnotherapy is a therapy that spans hundreds of years. Researchers have studied whether hypnosis can treat a variety of medical conditions, from irritable bowel syndrome to anxiety and depression. The goal for hypnotherapy is to help a patient learn to better control their state of awareness.

In the case of depression, hypnotherapy sessions may be focused on helping a person achieve a state of relaxation. In this relaxed state, they can discuss their feelings and emotions without raising stress and anxiety levels.

HOW HYPNOTHERAPY WORKS

A hypnotherapy session usually lasts about an hour. As a trained therapist I use various relaxation techniques to guide you into a hypnotic state. In this state, you are still conscious and aware. Your body becomes more relaxed and the mind more responsive to suggestions.

Any suggestions will depend on the condition or behaviour you are trying to treat. Hypnotherapy can help target unwanted or unhealthy habits and possibly replace them with healthier behaviours. Examples include being able to better control pain or anxiety or adjusting negative thought patterns that could be worsening depression symptoms.
